Can You Have Your Dream Wedding Ceremony and a Legal Marriage?

Oh Absolutely!

If you’ve ever wondered whether you can have your dream, personalised, joy‑filled wedding ceremony and still be legally married… the answer is a wholehearted yes.

Think of it as having your cake and eating it too.

Simply, you do not have to choose between a registrar and a celebrant. You can have both, in whatever order suits your plans, your budget, and your vision for the day.

And while celebrant‑led ceremonies are not yet legally recognised in England and Wales (as of April 2026), there are discussions within the government about changing the marriage law to suit modern couples. Change may be coming but you do not necessarily need to wait for change to create the ceremony you truly want.

Below are the three most popular options for couples in England & Wales, with example prices based in Essex as well as some insight from my experience working with couples across the county.

1. Registrar + Celebrant on the Same Day

Simply, the “all in one” approach.

A registrar attends your venue to complete the legal marriage whilst your celebrant leads the personalised ceremony that truly reflects you - your story, and the tone you want to create for the rest of the day.

This could be done a number of ways. Either separately or as one long ceremony. Some couples have the guests present at the legal part, some guests do not. The biggest driving factor is often the Registrar’s availability and timing…

As your celebrant, I am available whenever you need- not just a time slot. This means we can work together to create a ceremony that flows, is not restricted and something your guests will genuinely remember.

Pros

  • Everything happens on the same day

  • Guests (can) see both the legal and the personal elements

  • No need to travel anywhere else

Considerations

  • Registrars must be booked for a specific time slot

  • You’re tied to their availability

  • Some Registrars can be inflexible with having a celebrant on the day

  • It’s the most expensive option

Essex Registrar Fees (2026)

(These are approximate and based on Essex County Council’s published fees for ceremonies at approved venues)

  • Weekday ceremony: around £500–£600

  • Weekend ceremony: around £650–£750

  • Bank holidays:often £800+

(Fees vary by venue, time of day, and location within Essex)

2. Registry Office Wedding + Celebrant Ceremony at Your Venue

This is one of the most popular choices for couples I work with as you can get the legal part done simply and affordably.

You complete the legal marriage at a registry office (either before or after your wedding celebration) and then have your dream celebrant‑led ceremony at your venue on your actual wedding day.

When chatting to couples, I often use the 'baby analogy' here.
You celebrate a baby’s birthday on the day they were born- not the say the paperwork was filed. It is exactly the same with your wedding.

And this is why a celebrant-led ceremony is truly special. There’s no set-script, no time pressure, and no limitations - just a ceremony designed entirely around you, your story, and the moments that matter most.

Pros

  • More flexibility with dates and times

  • Your wedding day ceremony can be fully personalised

  • Often cheaper than having a registrar attend your venue

Considerations

  • Two dates to organise

  • Registry office availability may vary

  • Guests may not be able to attend this date as well (if that matters to you)

Essex Registry Office Fees (April 2026)

  • Around£232.50 – £382.50

The prices vary depending on the day, size of room, whether in peak season or not etc.

This option gives you the legal marriage without the higher cost of a registrar travelling to your venue.

3. The 2+2 Ceremony + Celebrant Wedding Day Ceremony

A 2+2 ceremony is the simplest, quickest, and most affordable way to complete the legal side of your marriage in England and Wales. It’s offered only at designated register offices and is designed to cover the legal minimum required for marriage - nothing more, nothing less.

It’s perfect for couples who want to sort the legalities quietly and efficiently, leaving the all their energy and focus on their celebrant-led ceremony (the day to truly celebrate).

A “2+2” ceremony is held at the register office with just the two of you and two witnesses. It’s short, simple, and purely legal (no ceremony, no readings, no music).

Pros

  • The most affordable legal route

  • Quick and simple

  • Complete freedom for your wedding day ceremony

  • No/ less pressure for the big day

Considerations

  • Two dates to organise

  • Limited availability

  • High demand

Essex 2+2 Ceremony Fee (April 2026)

  • £58.50(including the cost of your marriage certificates)

This is perfect for couples who want the legalities handled quietly and privately, saving the celebration for the big day.

The Bottom Line…

You don’t have to compromise.
You don’t have to choose between “legal” and “meaningful.”
And you don’t have to settle for a ceremony that feels rushed or impersonal.

Whether you want everything done in one day or you are happy to have it on two separate occasions…the bottom line is that you can absolutely have your dream wedding ceremony and a legal marriage.

Just simply…
